Black Hills Buffalo Thunder Show & Sale

Where Proven Programs Meet the Future of Bison Genetics

The Black Hills Buffalo Thunder Premier Bull Show & Sale represents the next generation of Dakota Territory Buffalo Association’s long-standing commitment to showcasing quality bison breeding stock and the producers behind them.

Built upon nearly three decades of DTBA Show & Sale history, Black Hills Buffalo Thunder brings together outstanding breeding bulls from bison operations across the region and beyond. The program combines live evaluation, production information, professional marketing and a competitive sale to give consignors an opportunity to showcase their genetics while providing buyers with the information they need to select their next herd sire.

Unlike a traditional livestock show where animals are simply judged and moved through a sale ring, Buffalo Thunder is designed to tell the larger story behind each bull. Consignors have the opportunity to present their ranch, breeding program and genetics, while professional photography and video give buyers an up-close look at each animal before sale day.

The bulls come together during DTBA’s annual Winter Conference in the Black Hills, where experienced bison judges evaluate them live for conformation and breeding potential. The competition recognizes the top bulls in a strong field of breeding prospects while creating an opportunity for producers and buyers to evaluate the animals firsthand.

On sale day, the focus shifts from the show to the future. Bulls are offered individually through a video-based auction, allowing the animals to remain safely in their pens while buyers compete for genetics they believe can make an impact in their own herds.

The inaugural 2026 Black Hills Buffalo Thunder Premier Bull Show & Sale, held as part of DTBA’s 30th Anniversary Celebration in Deadwood, South Dakota, brought together a competitive group of production breeding bulls. Cammack Buffalo Ranch captured the first-place honor, followed by Mosquito Park Enterprises in second and Skull Creek Bison in third.

Black Hills Buffalo Thunder continues DTBA’s tradition of innovation while returning the spotlight to something that has always been at the heart of its Show & Sale programs: the producer, the breeding program and the quality of the bison being offered.

As Buffalo Thunder moves forward, its purpose is bigger than a single show or sale. It is an opportunity to bring producers together, recognize exceptional breeding programs, connect buyers with quality genetics and continue raising the standard for production bison.

Showcasing great bulls. Recognizing great producers. Building better bison for the future of the bison industry.
